16th September 2004 Dave Kelly of Woolston, Warrington, was at his wits end with Lugar his 2 year old English Bull Terrier who had bitten staff at a boarding kennels, made a nuisance of himself barking, taken to snarling and lunging at innocent passers by and their dogs, regularly went berserk near prams and bikes and greeted guests by hurling himself at the front door and barking aggressively with hackles raised.
The final straw came when Lugar was at boarding kennels and bit one of the staff. ‘By this point I was seriously worried about what might happen and was particularly bothered that Lugar might attack someone when I took him out for a walk. I would cross the road just to avoid people’ admits Dave. ‘The truth is Lugar took very little notice of me and would pull on the lead, run off if I let him off the lead and lunge at people or their dogs. He was no better at home barking aggressively at anyone who passed the house or at the slightest noise. He really was impossible’.
Dave and girlfriend Nicola were forced to cancel a holiday because of Lugar. ‘We couldn’t send him back to the kennels and felt there was no one we could trust him with while we were away, so we had no choice but to cancel a trip to Barcelona’ says Dave. ‘By this point Lugar really was ruining our lives and I thought he would have to go’.
Before giving up on Lugar, Dave decided to give him one last chance and contacted Bark Busters home dog training. ‘I really didn’t think they would solve the problems I was having but felt I owed it to Lugar to give it a go’ says Dave. ‘And I can’t tell you how glad I am that I did’.
Within the first session Tracey Callaghan the Bark Buster Therapist in the Warrington area had Lugar listening and responding to his owner. ‘Tracey taught me how to get Lugar to respect me and how to show him that I was boss. I had always thought that I was being dominant, but I now realise Lugar didn’t think so’ laughs Dave.
It’s now several weeks since the training began and Dave is amazed at the transformation. ‘Lugar is 95% better and really is like a different dog. He is so much more relaxed and now walks to heel and lets people, dogs and bikes pass him without any fuss. The postman can walk up the drive without risking attack and he is calm and relaxed when friends come to the house. He has also stopped barking at every noise or passer by and is more likely to be asleep than guarding the house’ laughs Dave.
So what did Tracey do to transform this aggressive, disobedient dog? ‘Lugar was a nervous dog who thought he was in control’ explains Tracey ‘I showed Dave how to communicate with Lugar in a way that he understood and in doing so took away the responsibility he had, leaving him a happy and relaxed dog who didn’t need to bark or show aggression’.
Dave is delighted. ‘I can’t praise Bark Busters enough, Tracey really has worked wonders’.
