These owners have a nervous shy dog. She seems to be confident, but a lot of it is bravado. She has responded very well to being taught simple routines to help her when meeting visitors and new people. She has also been learning to be calmer around the grandchildren and another family dog. It takes time when a dog is not certain of itself, but these owners have made lots of progress already.

These owners have taken on a Springer Spaniel who has a truly terrible history with multiple homes in his short 4 years. He has finally found a home who are prepared to help him with his numerous problems. We foster and rehabilitate dogs ourselves and understand how much a damaged dog can disrupt the household. These owners have been doing a huge amount right and need help with some of the more complicated issues he is presenting with. Both Graham and I are looking forward to continuing to work with these owners and both their dogs.

Murray is a fantastic little fellow who just needed a guiding hand on his journey from puppy to fully grown dog. He's currently doing well in his teenage phase and his owners are coping brilliantly.

Harley is a 4 year old lurcher who is very friendly and affectionate to his human owners, who adopted him 6 months prior to asking us for some help. The main problem that they encountered was that Harley was very reactive to other dogs outdoors and would try to attack them. Walks were not fun or calming! After a couple of sessions we had reached the stage where the owners could go for a relaxing walk with Harley who, is now stand-offish rather than aggressive to other dogs. He still has his moments but things are progressing well.

Obi is a lovely dog but he is not confident and becomes easily unnerved. His owners got on really well with their neighbours and were concerned at his fears around their children. Many dog are fearful of young children because they are unpredictable. They can cope with older children and adults because they know what is going to happen next. With young children it is helping a dog observe a child so they can get used to them without feeling under threat. This does have to be undertaken carefully as it can backfire and scare a dog more. This is why putting training in place first was so important with Jo before a hands on follow up with Graham. Obi's owners practiced and gave Obi the best chance they could of success. It will need ongoing work, but Obi is looking to his owners now for support and help when he is scared and this will reap rewards going forward.

This owner had a Romanian rescue and had been instructed by her rescue not to take her dog out for walks as they thought she was overwhelmed by seeing dogs and people outside. Her owners were also scared that she would escape their garden as she had a history of escaping so had been taking her onlead in the garden and were worried she would slip her lead outside. I was able to get her off lead in the garden and practice getting her back to the family which she was really good at. It proved that she pretty good with other dogs and her problem was she wasn't used to being outside on a lead which is why she was overwhelmed. For safety she was attached to two leads. One on her collar and one on her harness. Graham has since done a further lead walking session so she can be managed on the lead when pulling and they are doing really well with her.

Poppy has always been a barky dog reacting to outside noises and people moving in the flat. Her owner had tried many ways to stop this, but Poppy would still have episodes of excessive barking which her owner couldn’t stop. This got much worse when her owner’s partner bought his rambunctious Labrador Leo to visit. By the time I saw him at eight months old he was typical of many frustrated adolescent boys and was mounting, jumping up and mouthing both Poppy and her owner. It seemed as though he didn’t mean any harm, but Poppy wasn’t coping, and it was difficult for both owners to work out how to handle the situation. Her owner has done an excellent job of training Poppy to come to her rather than trying to deal with Leo herself. Her barking is triggered by noise sensitivity rather than territorial barking so a calming “Thundershirt†is being used to help Poppy to be a little less sensitive. Visits from Leo have been stopped now during Covid-19, but I have been speaking to Poppy’s owner remotely and will be guiding them remotely when they are able to visit their holiday home again.    Â
